An independent study published in JMIR mHealth and uHealth in 2026 has rated ONCOassist the highest-quality free mobile app for oncology healthcare professionals.
The researchers (Liñares et al.) systematically searched the Google Play and Apple App Stores in June 2023 and December 2024, following PRISMA guidelines. From 221 apps identified, 20 met the inclusion criteria and were assessed by two independent reviewers using the Mobile App Rating Scale (MARS). MARS scores engagement, functionality, aesthetics, information quality and subjective quality on a five-point scale.
The average score across the 20 apps was 3.51. Only two apps passed the 4.0 threshold the authors use for good quality. ONCOassist scored highest, with a mean of 4.25, ahead of Oncology Board Review at 4.03.
The authors highlighted ONCOassist’s comprehensive functionality and high information quality. They noted its clinical decision support tools, including treatment protocols, prognostic calculators and toxicity grading aligned with professional oncology practice, and described ONCOassist as a promising tool warranting further investigation.
The study also found that most free apps for cancer care professionals are of low to moderate quality, and called for standardised evaluation frameworks for clinical apps.
